1. Beware of Holiday Décor

Shiny ornaments, dangling ribbons, and twinkling lights can look like irresistible toys.

  • Keep breakable ornaments higher on the tree.
  • Tape down or hide electrical cords to prevent chewing.
  • Avoid tinsel — it can cause dangerous blockages if swallowed.

2. Watch Out for Toxic Holiday Plants

Some classic Christmas plants aren’t pet-friendly.

  • Poinsettias can cause stomach upset.
  • Mistletoe and holly can be toxic if eaten.
  • Opt for pet-safe alternatives or place plants out of reach.

One of our all time staff favorite picks – it’s so easy to use and it’s super effective! PlaqueOff is a dental supplement that prevents plaque & tartar from building up on the teeth. For any existing plaque the pet does have; the supplement makes it porous, therefore can be removed more easily with the help of dental chews. PlaqueOff is a special type of seaweed powder that comes in a bottle with a small scoop inside, they also make dental chews with the supplement. (Pro tip –FREZZE the dental chews before giving them to your pet to make the chews last longer and it will also make the chew more abrasive & effective.) We recommend to use both the powder and dental chews together for the best results.
We also recommend to switch up what types of chews are being offered to your pet. Different types of chews would include: cow ears, raw bones, elk antlers, bullysticks, etc. Providing a different variety of dental chews means they are shaped differently, therefore it causes the animal to have to hold the chews at different angles and it will cover more area in their mouth and different angles of their teeth. For example, a FLAT cow ear when chewed results in a dog having to use mostly their back teeth, which is where the biggest problem areas typically are for plaque & tartar build up. Tartar is the darker, harder to remove version of plaque. Tartar can surprisingly take a short amount of time to form if the issues are not addressed within the pet sooner than later. As we approach the Fourth of July, we at Bark If You’re Dirty wanted to reach out to ensure that you and your furry friends have a safe and enjoyable celebration. This month’s newsletter is dedicated to providing essential tips on keeping your dogs and cats safe during the holiday festivities, as well as valuable insights into heat safety and keeping your pets cool and entertained.

Fourth of July Safety Tips for Dogs and Cats

Create a Safe Haven
Loud fireworks can be stressful for pets. Designate a quiet and comfortable area in your home where your pet can retreat to during fireworks displays. We highly recommend picking up some of our Super Snouts CHILL+OUT Calming CBD chews. Each soft chew contains 5mg of CBD plus additional calming ingredients like L-Tryptophan, Chamomile, and Passion Flower. They are super soft and contain beef liver for those finicky dogs. CBD helps with fearfulness and anxiety due to loud noises such as fireworks, travel anxiety, company visiting your home, it will also help with pain and nausea relief. We recommend our 90mg CBD oil for cats.

Secure Your Pet
Ensure your pets are wearing properly fitting collars or harnesses with updated identification tags. It’s also wise to have them microchipped for added security.
Keep Fireworks Away
Fireworks can be hazardous to pets. Store fireworks, sparklers, and other pyrotechnics in a secure location, out of your pets’ reach.
As summer temperatures soar here in Arizona, it’s crucial to take extra precautions to protect your pets from heat-related issues. Here’s what you need to know:
Hydration is Key
Provide fresh water at all times, and ensure your pets have access to shade. On hot days, consider placing multiple water bowls around the house and backyard. If out and about, make sure to have a travel water bowl with you at all times.
Limit Exercise
Exercise your pets during the cooler parts of the day, such as early mornings or evenings. Avoid intense physical activities during peak heat hours.
Never Leave Pets in Vehicles
Even on mildly warm days, the temperature inside a parked car can escalate rapidly, leading to heatstroke. Never leave your pets unattended in a vehicle.
Keeping Your Dog Cool and Entertained
Here are some helpful tips to keep your canine companion cool, entertained, and mentally stimulated:
Chewing on Raw Bones
Raw bones can provide a long-lasting, enjoyable chewing experience for your dog while also promoting dental health. Ensure the bones are safe and appropriate for your pet’s size and breed. We recommend our Northwest Naturals Raw bones, these are a huge hit with dogs and one of our customer favorites! An honorable mention would have to be the frozen duck, turkey and chicken necks. While they are not as long lasting as the raw bones, they are still a great chewable treat option for pets that aren’t hardcore chewers or who don’t like to chew on on harder bones. Always supervise your pets when giving them treats to chew on.

Interactive Dog Toys
Stuffing a rubber toy with frozen treats or a mixture of wet food and freezing it can keep your dog engaged and help them cool down during hot days.
Frozen Treats
Create delicious frozen treats by blending dog-friendly ingredients like yogurt, mashed bananas, and peanut butter. Freeze the mixture in ice cube trays, specialized molds, or a rubber dog toy for a refreshing snack.
Lick Mats
Spread a tasty treat, peanut butter, wet dog food, or any crazy combo onto a lick mat, which can provide entertainment and mental stimulation for your dog while keeping them occupied and cool.
